Before you pay a deposit.

The advert is a starting point. Ask what the records support, what the seller can prove and what is still unresolved.

Free preview of a product KELNU is developing. No account or payment needed. This general guide can be tested in different countries; local rules and vehicle-specific checks still apply. It does not inspect your car or run database lookups.

Tick each step after reviewing it, record the seller’s answer and note what evidence is still missing. A tick means reviewed, not verified or safe to buy.

1. Check identity and local documents

Ask to see the original registration and any ownership or title documents required locally. Compare vehicle details with the documents. Registration alone may not establish ownership. Verify requirements with your local transport authority.

Copy & ask: “What documents show that you are entitled to sell this car, and can I compare them with the vehicle?”

2. Review dated records

Ask for service invoices and any local inspection or roadworthiness records. Compare dates and mileage. A test certificate is a snapshot, not a guarantee of current condition or proof that every repair was completed.

Copy & ask: “What work was completed after the recorded concerns, and can I see the invoices?”

3. Compare claims with evidence

Record a specific advert or seller claim, the paperwork shown and what is still missing. A seller answer remains a claim until supported; paperwork also needs careful checking.

Copy & ask: “You mentioned regular servicing. Can you show the service records and corresponding invoices before we discuss a deposit?”

4. Identify history questions

This workspace does not check finance, liens, theft or write-off status. Find the appropriate licensed or official checks for your country separately. Missing information remains unresolved.

Copy & ask: “Are there finance, ownership or damage-history concerns, and what independent records can I check?”

5. Observe condition and seek help

In good light, note visible damage, uneven tyre wear, warning lights or apparent leaks for a qualified inspector to assess. These observations do not diagnose a fault or rule out damage. Do not open hot fluid caps, touch high-voltage components or work underneath the car. Follow the vehicle manual. Arrange any test-drive with permission and appropriate insurance.

Copy & ask: “Can an independent qualified inspector assess my concerns before I decide?”

6. Clarify payment terms

Check who you are dealing with and get any deposit amount, purpose and refund conditions in writing. Consumer protections vary by country and seller type. Pause if important evidence is missing or you feel pressured.

Copy & ask: “What happens to my deposit if the independent checks reveal a problem?”

Photos for your own reference

With the seller’s permission, add photos of non-personal evidence or an area you want inspected. Do not add faces, signatures, names, addresses, registration numbers, VINs or complete V5C documents. Crop or redact them first.

Photos are resized on this device and attached to your saved dossier. KELNU does not receive, read or verify them. Original photos on your device are unchanged.

Copy a practical seller message

Start the conversation before travelling.

Hi, I’m interested in the car. Before arranging a viewing, could you confirm the registration, service history and any outstanding finance or write-off history? Please let me know what paperwork is available for repairs and servicing. At the viewing I’d like to check the original registration and relevant ownership documents, and discuss an insured test-drive or inspection. If a deposit is needed, please send its refund conditions in writing. Thanks.
